The Place of Renaissance Villa in Portuguese Architecture
Coordinator: Amílcar Gil Pires
Project Summary / Objectives:
Within the domestic Portuguese architecture is recognized the existence of an architectonic heritage that has as its reference the model of the Renaissance Italian Villa. Identified in some well-known cases but very less studied cases, in the specific field of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. These Portuguese Villas are recognized, valued and identify as having by reference the model of the suburban Villa, but this value is not scientifically proved. That is one of the main objectives of this investigation project. The renaissance Villa has its place on the context of the architectonic Portuguese culture, has it is proven by historiography that takes care of these architectonic type, materialized in Portugal at the Portuguese Villa, that defines and typifies this period. This research project aims to scientifically prove what is, in fact, that place and how it establishes and roots it´s self in the course of history. The main objective of this investigation is to identify the place of Renaissance Villa in the evolution of the domestic architecture after the sixteenth century, especially its relation with the Portuguese suburban Villa, for which the latter works as a model of reference, and there will be made an analytic research about this Villa, recognized as place.

Erudite Residential Architecture from the Eighteenth Century in Rural Places
Coordinator: Amílcar Gil Pires
Project Summary / Objectives:
Starting at the Villeggiatura on a ideological basis and Renaissance Suburban Villa as an architectural reference model, revealing structural principles of architecture over the territory, it is recognized in Portuguese Suburban Villa (Quinta de Recreio) the conceptual interpretation and architectural realization of this ideal, visible in architectural practice of design with the place.
The Portuguese Suburban Villa (Quinta de Recreio) like its Italian conceptual model, stood out, in different periods of architecture history as a cultural symbol. This expresses, through its architecture, emerging signs of its compositional elements and the meanings attached to experiences that are peculiar, the myth that it took to build, reflected in attraction to Nature, the dialectic nature/culture or artifice and the prerogatives of privilege/power or class pride.
The same applies to other architectural types with cultural interest in Portuguese and Brazilian rural space, such as the Solar and Casa de Fazenda (Farmhouse). The meanings of those architectural complexes vary with the place and with the way to build, including gardens and all details as a whole. They are highlighted by their individual characteristics, expressed by a revealing architectural grammar of representativeness inherent to socioeconomic status and cultural level of their owners.

Designing with the place - Rehabilitation and Contemporary Architectural Intervention for a Sustainable Heritage
Coordinator: Amílcar Gil Pires
Project Summary / Objectives:
The aim of this research project is to develop a research strategy in the specific areas of architecture, heritage and landscape, directly related to the training of the architect, in the final phase of his academic career, and that interacts with the professional practice of architecture, in a particular context of architectural rehabilitation.
In addition to the complete professional and scientific training of the future architect, this strategy intends to contribute to knowledge of scientific rigor of various architectural types of specific implementation in non-urban territory, in a very rich and complex field such as intervention in heritage. It is also intended to highlight and prove their values (spatial, cultural, artistic and experiential) due to their historical character, but also, and fundamentally, to explore their potentialities for a contemporary and future use that preserves in time these Values as a way of maintaining a particular cultural identity.
From the operational point of view, and in the case of research in architectural design (practical and theoretical), it is based on a methodology that is supported by the concept of "Designing with the Place" and not "on" or "against" the place, in a perspective of "heritage sustainability" (physical, environmental, economic and cultural).

Place and Monastic and Conventual Architecture in Rural Context
Coordinator: Amílcar Gil Pires
Project Summary / Objectives:
The research is supported by the analysis of the architectural complexes Convent and Monastery with foundation in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, implanted in non-urban territory, and its insertion in the Place, from the interpretation of its formal design and the way in which it solves a specific functional program in a particular site and context.
The apprehension and characterization of their architectural structure, spatiality and functional uses will allow us to understand which are the fundamental models that give them conceptual support, the influences related to the cultural context in which they are inserted and the importance of the constructive customs, materials and constructive techniques used.

Modern and Contemporary Architecture as Expression of an Architectural Culture and Values of the Place
Coordinator: Amílcar Gil Pires
Project Summary / Objectives:
The contemporary interest of this theme is demonstrated by the thesis that seeks to prove the existence of an architectural culture to design with the Place that was being built and consolidated in the most important moments of the History of Portuguese Architecture. This is expressed in the ever original and culturally innovative design attitudes of coherent resolution of architectural problems, more or less referenced to recognized architectural models and types of architectural historiography, but always coherent, intelligent, sustainable, and creative in the way they appropriate pre-existing natural or artificial place - constant unquestionably reaffirmed and valued in the Modern and Contemporary Portuguese Architecture.

VILLAZORES | Historic Suburban Villas and Manor Houses of Azores – identification, valuation and revitalization of an architectural heritage
Coordinator: Amílcar Gil Pires
Project Summary / Objectives:
The main objective of this project is to make an analytic research about the Suburban Villa and the Manor House of this period recognized as place. This study objectively refers to the way these architectonic structures are designed in function of a structured well and defined spatial model and from the specific place that works as a physical support. The specific architectonic culture of the region where the Villa is inserted, the landscape context in which it is inserted and the relations with other Portuguese Villas. As well as with other urban places are also taken into account in the process of understanding and characterizing the Place.
This research project also aims to identify and enhance the value of an architectural heritage — the Quinta de Recreio and theSolar dos Azores built in the 17th and 18th centuries — which has as its reference the Italian Renaissance Villa. The aim is to reveal their place in the context of Portuguese architectural culture from the perspective of Integrated sustainability — patrimonial, environment and cultural.

The House of ‘Região do Oeste’; The House as matrix of the Territory and Identity of ‘Região do Oeste’ (Western Region)
Coordinator: António Santos Leite
Project Summary / Objectives:
The purpose of this Research Project is to analyse, systematize and interpret in a culturally integrated way the ‘Houses' of ‘Região do Oeste’ (Western Region), these houses are understood in a broad sense, ranging from the traditional architecture of manor houses and country houses of agricultural and/or leisure production, to the new housing and tourist realities, which today increasingly justify new socio-cultural and economic opportunities for the sustainable development of a specific rural territory undergoing effective transformation.
Concretely, this Project will seek to contextualize these 'Houses', in a territorial and in an identitary way, in view of its specific implantations and architectural typification. From the 'new world' that was affirmed with the liberalism of the nineteenth century to our present, the Project will seek in it to recognize the current prospects that can, not only by their architecture, but also socially and economically, qualify the territory in a sustainable way for a foreseeable future.

Architecture – Memory and Identity; Identity Matrix to the Sustained Reinvention of a 'New Inhabit'
Coordinator: António Santos Leite
Project Summary / Objectives:
The Research Project aims to reflect and interpret, in a culturally comprehensive way, on the importance of Memory and Identity as factors of qualification and sustainability of Architecture and Inhabit.
Based on this objective, the Project should elaborate studies and reflections that, generic and/or objectively, demonstrate the value and effectiveness of these matrix determinants. This search is justified because, with certainty, these determinants are now unavoidable for a qualified and intentional cultural differentiation.
In fact, regardless of the 'place' where we find ourselves, the understanding and appreciation of 'Memory and Identity' is, for any true cultural act like Architecture, a potentially qualifying reality. Indeed, this finding is evidence since the hegemonic and accelerated globalization, mediatization, and computerization of the world has alienated/devalued its previous diversity.
In this context, the Project should specifically promote research with two areas of approach:
A first scope, which will address the subject from a broader perspective, seeking synthesis answers to the valuation of a generic 'cultural sustainability' in architecture. And a second scope that, focused on concrete situations, explains, typifies, and values specific areas of this same generic reality.

Arquitetura - Memória e Identidade; Matriz de Identidade para a Reinvenção Sustentada de um 'Novo Habitar'
Coordenador: António Santos Leite
Resumo / Objetivos do projeto:

Modern and Contemporary Architecture with Steel Structures and the Relationship with Place
Coordinator: Inês Daniel de Campos
Project Summary / Objectives:
The proposed research falls within the field of Architecture and Heritage, aiming to synthesize the design conception process and its materiality using metal structures. It involves studying architectural works that employed steel in the conception of the design idea and exploring its relationship with the site throughout history. This includes examining Modern and Contemporary architectural buildings constructed with exposed steel structures in profiled systems, while understanding their cultural characteristics and connection to the site—typological, spatial, experiential, formal, and material aspects. The goal is to develop new typologies that adapt to emerging models of living, supported by the analysis of proposed case studies and others that may arise during the investigation. Additionally, the research seeks to analyze the types of living spaces in Portuguese architectural culture, exploring their cultural characteristics and relationship to the site, along with their typological, spatial, and experiential traits across different historical periods. An important focus is on how to rehabilitate such architecture using this steel construction system. Equally significant is interpreting the relationship between the old and the new, where the prevailing typological form possesses a simplistic and/or minimalist character, combined with a perfect harmony with the site, despite the differences in materials and construction systems.

ART3C – Climate, Community, Communication – the ‘montado’ (cork oak forest) landscape
Coordinator: Maria da Graça Saraiva
Project Summary / Objectives:
The ART3C project aims to promote awareness and communication over climate change impacts and effects, integrating art and science, through a collaborative process in a context of a rural landscape of Portugal, known as the ‘Charneca’(heath). This landscape is mostly covered by the ‘Montado’ ecosystem, (evergreen oak woodlands) and its biodiversity, ecosystem services and economic values have been widely recognized of outstanding natural and cultural value.
Climate change in Mediterranean European regions show a growing impact, due to rainfall reduction, raising temperatures, droughts, aridity, and forest fires. It is important to raise awareness on these effects and influence sustainable attitudes and behaviors towards the management of these territories. With this in mind, a local ONG ‘Charneca Landscape Observatory (CLO)’, brought together a multidisciplinary team, integrating artists, scientists, local schools and community groups, to develop this collaborative project, based on a agroforestry property in the municipality of Chamusca.
The active cooperation and cocreation among the team members, sharing ideas and knowledge, has developed an inspiring dynamic creative process. The artists developed their works during artistic residences and coordinate workshops with students and interest groups in the community.
Two final public exhibitions have been held (Santarém and IGOT/University of Lisbon) and four presentations in congresses. A catalog has been published showing the final results.

ART3C – Clima, Comunidade, Comunicação - o Montado como Paisagem
Coordenador: Maria da Graça Saraiva
Resumo / Objetivos do projeto:

A. R. da Silva Júnior - the Architect of Atlantis
Coordinator: Jorge Firmino Nunes
Project Summary / Objectives:
António Rodrigues Silva Júnior (1868-1937) was a non-graduated architect, with a versatile activity expressed in engineering and architecture projects some of which remained unbuilt. In addition, Silva Junior was a well-known theosophist, an unusual fact in the tradition of Portuguese architectural culture revealing an original penchant, for archi-ancient historical speculations as he was an enthusiastic adherent to Theosophy, becoming an outstanding member and president of the Portuguese Theosophical Society. It is within the framework of Theosophy that Silva Júnior will thus develop his “Atlantean” speculation, which will see the light of day in the publication of essays in various issues of the magazine A Architectura Portuguesa, in its 2nd series, between 1930 and 1933. His speculations around the “visional” restitution of Atlantis and its buildings, excel in etheric and astral research, translated into canonical projects, some of which are unusual, but marked by its architectural culture.
Documen- tália: The role of Italian architectural culture in the process of cosmopolitanism and internationalization of Portugal in the 20 th and 21 th century
Coordinator: Raffaella Maddaluno
Project Summary / Objectives:
We are witnessing an unprecedented amplification of Portuguese culture, which has transformed a strip of land on the edge of the ocean into a place of international convergence. And architecture has contributed to making Portugal a central place in the international cultural debate. The question that gives rise to the idea of the project is: what role has Italian architectural culture played in this process of internationalization? How and if has it contributed with schools, magazines, books on architecture, to make cosmopolitan architects such as Távora, Siza and Souto de Moura, and later architects linked to the city of Lisbon, such as Carrilho da Graça , Gonçalo Byrne, the Mateus , among others? And vice versa: how much and in what way has Italian architecture welcomed the Portuguese influence? Which methods, which values characterize Portuguese architectural practice, have influenced the Italian debate? In spite of the copious information on the subject, there is no comprehensive general study that provides a complete and unified vision that extends to our days There is any global map that visualizes, summarizes and returns, in its many facets, the context we deal with and this is the first objective that the research project aims to achieve.

Atmosphere of the Architectural Environment
Coordinator: Luís Miguel Moreira Pinto
Project Summary / Objectives:
The research proposal titled "Atmosphere of the Architectural Environment" aims to explore the emotional significance of shapes and colors in architecture and architectural design. This study seeks to understand how visual and spatial elements influence the emotions and experiences of those who inhabit or use built environments. Using both qualitative and quantitative methods, the research will analyze the relationship between architectural form, color palettes, and the emotional responses of users. Through techniques such as observation, questionnaires, and interviews, the study intends to identify patterns of perception and assess the emotional impact of different architectural features. Furthermore, it will explore how these elements contribute to the creation of specific atmospheres in built spaces, influencing the well-being and behavior of users. The results of this research have the potential to influence design decisions and aesthetic choices in architectural projects, aiming to create environments with emotional significance for the people who inhabit or use them daily.
Cathedral of Portalegre: The question of authenticity
Coordinator: Rui Barreiros Duarte
Project Summary / Objectives:
To guarantee the authenticity of the Cathedral of Portalegre, a survey of the architectural elements and a historical investigation into the materiality and color of the monument were carried out previously. Among the various works to be carried out, there was a need to restore the Mannerist altarpieces, unique in Portugal; glazed tile paneling had to be restored and corrected; it was necessary to restore the glazed tiles of the Old Sacristy; to cover the spires with glazed tiles; restore very dirty and degraded decorative elements; choose the color of the cloister. In the new support area, green roofs with flowers were created, responding to sustainability issues, while diluting their presence and letting go of heritage buildings. The lighting design and natural light highlight the beauty and color of the entire set. The results obtained met the expectations set out in the program, registering a global work of great rigor, with colors being used following historical investigations. Therefore, the architecture, paintings, and liturgical furniture harmony and authenticity of the set were achieved.
BIOCOLOUR: Development of a new typology of biodyes for dyeing sustainable
Coordinator: Manuela Cristina Paulo Carvalho de Almeida Figueiredo
Project Summary / Objectives:
In a context in which consumers/end users are increasingly informed and aware of the environmental impact of their lifestyles and consumption patterns, it is very important that the industrial sector, in this specific case the chemical and textile industries, collaborate and in together find technologically advanced solutions that meet this ambition. The BIOCOLOUR project aims to research and develop dyes for application in textile finishing processes, namely dyeing and printing, using bacterial metabolic processes for the bioproduction of these same dyes. In addition, with this project, it is expected to obtain dyeing and printing processes with a reduction in contaminated effluents, as a result of the high biodegradability of the biodyes to be developed, thus contributing to the reduction of industrial effluent decontamination processes. This project therefore aims to achieve the following research and development milestones:
Aims: New biotechnological approach to obtain the biodye;High performance and functionalization of the biodye to textile substrates; Reproducibility and uniformity of the process on various types of substrates; Development of prototypes with prior application of a dyeing and/or printing process, and validation of them. Study of Scale-up conditions. The project brings together a consortium with complementary capabilities, which will help to respond to the challenges of the proposed research.
Denmark, Finland, and Portugal, like many other EU countries, face a common challenge: young people are moving from rural areas to cities in search of better opportunities. But not everyone follows this trend. Some young people choose to stay or even return to rural life, and they often find it tough to adjust. Life in the countryside can feel very different from what they’re used to, especially when media and city life paint a different picture of what’s "normal." Studies from Norway, Portugal, and Denmark show that many young people struggle to find a space where they can truly express themselves and take part in local culture.
R YOUCULT is trying to change that by building a bridge between rural traditions and the needs of today’s youth. It aligns with European initiatives that highlight the importance of using culture to bring communities together and make sure everyone feels included. R YOUCULT wants to create more opportunities for young people in rural areas, supporting EU goals like inclusive societies and better prospects for rural youth.
Aims: Their approach is practical: they aim to train cultural workers in rural areas to help young people find their voice and build connections with their communities. This means breaking down the barriers between generations and encouraging local leaders to actively support youth culture. The hope is that with the right support, young people can create a vibrant cultural life in their own hometowns, bringing fresh energy to rural communities.
For the Right to Housing: Activism, Process and Design
Coordinator: Rui Barreiros Duarte
Project Summary / Objectives:
The research focuses on the PROBLEM OF HOUSING, a theme questioned from the sociological, legislative, conceptualization and construction points of view. Integrating fragmented disciplinary views, it develops a critical perspective that aggregates ways of architectural intervention in the city, integrating the beautiful, useful and fair city with community dynamics. The aim is to focus on and synthesize the social, economic and environmental impact of intervention models and processes in the field of architecture and urbanism, as a counterpoint to the urban disintegration and loss of use and exchange values that have presided over the construction of the city.
Architecture and Fiction - communicating universes
Coordinator: Carlos Ferreira
Project Summary / Objectives:
The effects of contagion and the limits between fiction and the projected or constructed idea are sometimes difficult to define. We recognize periods in our history where social and technological transformations reflect desires and display the limits of inventive capacity regarding new paradigm shifts.
However, nothing emerges from nothing, it seems that the creative act results from the combination of new factors or perspectives on something that already exists, in a kind of combination between magic and science. Among fictions, and some realities in space architecture, we chose science fiction as one of the most fascinating for architecture. The very expression of science fiction reflects some contradiction between what emerges through simulation, illusion or disguise and the value of proving and validating facts that explain the “real” world in a more cosmic dimension.
Interface Design - theory and practice
Coordinator: Carlos Ferreira
Project Summary / Objectives:
The theory and practice of design is increasingly assumed as a dialectic in deep revision, permanently lacking new and old inputs on its dynamics and interactions. Both are self-feeding and are hardly conceived in isolation, even if at times some misconceptions or extremisms may emerge. Among a vast framework of references that address the dialectics of the project, we have established as our main focus the boundaries and domains of architectural design and urban and territorial regulation.
In this scope, apparently broader, but simultaneously with a greater precision in its control mechanisms, we appropriate the concept of interface. This, understood as something that provides the physical or logical connection between parts of a system that cannot be directly connected, a place where different things interact. In our interface proposal, design theory and practice emerge in its various conceptions, mainly at the level of design scales. This interaction needs, therefore, greater depth, where the mechanisms of regulation and control of the project are confronted with some of its conceptual bases.
